How Often Should You Update Your Acting Headshot?
Apr 16, 2025 | By: Lindsey Macdonald Photography Inc.
One of the most common questions I get from actors is, “How often should I update my headshots?” And the answer is simple: whenever your look changes, your headshot should too. But let’s break that down a little more.
1. Your Headshot Should Reflect the Current You
Your headshot is your first impression. It’s the image casting directors see before they even read your name or your résumé. If you walk into the room looking noticeably different from your photo, you’re creating confusion before you even open your mouth. That disconnect can hurt your chances, even if your performance is spot-on.
So here’s a quick checklist:
• Have you changed your hair significantly (cut, colour, style)?
• Have you lost or gained a noticeable amount of weight?
• Have you aged out of a certain type (e.g., playing teenagers vs. young professionals)?
• Have you started booking different roles and need to reflect a shift in type?
If you answered yes to any of these, it might be time for a refresh.
2. Industry Standard: Every 1–2 Years
Even if your look hasn’t changed drastically, you should still aim to update your headshots every 1–2 years. Why? Because your energy, presence, and even your sense of self evolve—and that shows up on camera. A headshot from two years ago may no longer capture your essence the way it once did.
Fresh photos keep your portfolio current and show that you’re actively working and investing in your career.
3. You’ve Switched Agents? Update Time.
Changing representation is a big deal—and it’s the perfect time to refresh your headshots. If your previous shots weren’t getting the traction you hoped for with your last agent, consider this an opportunity to rebrand and start fresh. A new agent might be marketing you differently or sending you out for different roles, and your headshots should align with that new direction.
4. Update When You’re Rebranding
Are you shifting from quirky best friend roles to edgy dramatic leads? Stepping into more commercial territory? Your headshots should reflect the direction you’re heading, not just where you’ve been.
A solid set of updated headshots tailored to your new type can help reposition you in the eyes of agents and casting directors.
5. Keep It Professional
Updating your headshot doesn’t mean snapping a quick selfie or asking a friend with a nice camera. Your headshot is a marketing tool—and a good one is worth the investment. Work with a photographer who understands the industry, your type, and how to bring out your unique presence on camera.
